Season to date

The 2010 season appears to have got off to a flying start and the rain has, almost, held off for us so far.

Now we are in to week 5 it may be a timely moment for coaches and parents to refresh their knowledge of the Onslow Way – the Club’s philosophy for Junior Football. You can find the full document on this website by clicking here.

Nursery Grade

The season has started  on Sunday mornings from 9.30 to 10.30 at Raroa Normal Intermediate School in Johnsonville. Please ensure you turn up in plenty of time to park considerately and find your team.

Club Shirts/uniform

A reminder that, as in all previous years, Club shirts are only to be worn for games and not for training. These are expensive items to replace and we would like to ensure that they are kept in as good a condition as possible. On a related matter could you please check that shin pads are worn inside the sock? It is potentially quite dangerous for them to be worn on the outside and coaches (and referees) should make sure that shin pads are worn on the inside.

Practices at Nairnville – some gentle reminders

It is important that teams who have been allocated a practice time on the turf stick to the time and space allocated to them. There is usually a team waiting to jump on the moment the previous team finishes so could all teams please finish at the correct time. Additionally please make sure you have paid your coach/manager $20 for the turf practice fee.

Please remember that teams must not practise on the Nairnville grass fields when the Council has closed the grounds (check the Council grounds line – 04 801 4134 if there is any doubt).  Also please remember that team must not practise in the goalmouths at any time. Unfortunately teams that fail to meet the Council's requirements may place at risk the Club's future ability to use Nairnville Park for training.

The Club Captain collected three Onslow size 4 balls at the turf last Tuesday night when all the football teams had finished and rugby was starting. It's pretty busy on the turf but please could teams check that they have their own gear at the end of practice. Any teams missing a ball after Tuesday’s practice can contact Nigel Piper to get it back [nigel@onslow.org.nz]. Any goals used by teams must be put away. Some teams have been spotted just packing up and leaving.

In an odd situation for Wellington, the Council was considering closing grounds due to lack of rain, the hardness of the grounds and the possibility of injuries to players. This has hopefully been averted but could coaches please be aware that the grounds are still very hard and they may need to adapt their training sessions accordingly.

New website – member input required

You have probably already seen the Club’s new website design. We are aiming to put all required information onto this site providing timely information for coaches, parents and players. There are still some sections to be updated but if you come across any obvious errors or have suggestions for improvement then please let me know on football@onslow.org.nz.

We would love for players, coaches or parents to add information to the site (match reports, photos, items for sale). The Grade 10 Narbadas currently have a match report on the website and it would be great to have more feedback and reports on exciting games or other news items which can be viewed by all. Again please send these to the email address above. Once again many thanks to Jonathon Alsop for his work in developing the new site.

Coaching/Referee Courses

The 3-Clubs (Onslow, North Wellington and Karori) coaching calendar is on the website along with a Coaches Development Guide. There are a number of different courses offered through the season including the ones below:

Club Based Referee course – this Friday - There is another Club Based Referee (CBR) course next Friday 14/5 at 7pm to be held at North Wellington AFC.  Onslow have already put around 35 people on the course to date and the feedback has been great.  The course takes about 3 hours with a small multi-choice exam at the end.  CBR is a pre-requisite for referees in the G9 to G14 level but it's open to anybody.  CBR gives you a good oversight of the rules and therefore gives you confidence when reffing games.  If you are interested in doing this course please let Nigel Piper know at nigel@onslow.org.nz

The course of learning combines an examination of both the ‘How’ and ‘What’ of coaching through an interactive and practical workshop and provides coaches with the opportunity for ‘on the job learning’ with post workshop tasks.

When: Sunday 06/06/2010 at the Karori club rooms 8.30am-12.30pm

To register for these courses please contact Juan Propato on propato_coordinator@yahoo.co.nz

Girls Only Soccer League (GOSL)

Those involved in GOSL will be aware that the league has trebled in size this season which has led to a few teething problems. Please bear with the Club and with Capital Football as they work through any issues. The current games are grading games so there may be some discrepancy in team abilities to start off with. Obviously if you do have any concerns then please speak to your coach in the first instance.

Big thanks to our supporters

The Club wishes to thank Football Central (formerly Champs) for providing equipment, including boots, for our 3-Clubs Coaching Coordinator, Juan Bautista Propato. Football Central is our preferred supplier of gear and can be found upstairs in Left Bank Arcade, Cuba Mall.

Thank you also to The Lanes bowling for the player of the day certificates. We very much appreciate the support.

Injury Prevention and Management

Once again a quick reminder of the importance of injury prevention. Successful injury prevention must be part of an integrated programme that covers all the issues that lead to sporting injuries. ACC’s Sport Smart programme for injury prevention outlines some areas which will help reduce the risk of injury during sport: http://www.acc.co.nz/preventing-injuries/playing-sport/sportsmart-10-point-plan/index.htm

This website may also be of use. It is a free, online football fitness trainer designed and run by New Zealand’s top physical conditioners: http://www.soccersmart.co.nz/

Further Information

Key information is available on the website and this is always the first place you should check for information. However if required you can email me at football@onslow.org.nz. Please do not reply to this email as it is automatically generated.

All the best
