Important - Practice timesAll coaches / managers should email sarah@onslow.org.nz their requested training slots including team name, contact person and preferred day and time and location. Most practices take place on Nairnville Park where we have two fields each divided into three training slots. Practice on any Council grounds may not start until 6 April 2010. Please practice in the space and time allocated to you as there are many teams training at any one time. There is no access to Nairnville Park on a Friday or over the weekend. Teams are also requested not to practice in the goal mouths as they do deteriorate over the winter. We have yet to receive confirmation from the Council as to availability of the artificial turf at Nairnville. We only receive a limited amount of time on the turf, but it is shared around as many teams as possible. In most cases teams are allocated one quarter of the turf to practice on. Last year we only had access on Monday until 5pm, Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:30 to 7:pm. We are hoping to be allocated a similar amount of time this year. There is no access on the days not allocated to us. The charge for turf practice is $20 per player for the season. Allocations are made on a first come first served basis. Each team is allocated one slot either under lights or on the turf. Once all teams have been allocated some training time, a second practice session may be able to be fitted in. I need to know of any teams that have organized to practice at schools, so that we are able to keep track of where all teams are training. All teams will be notified of their allocated slots by 29 March. Every effort is made to accommodate as many requests as possible. Please be patient with this process but if you haven’t heard anything from me by 29 March please email me again. Nursery GradeA reminder to all boys turning 5 or 6 and girls turning 5, 6 or 7 who wish to enrol in Nursery Grade (held on Sunday mornings at Raroa School) – enrolments close on Monday 29th March. Please enrol online or contact zoe@onslow.org.nz. New websiteWe are very pleased to announce that the Club will have a brand new website in the next few days – still to be found at www.onslow.org.nz. This is much more user-friendly than the old site and should provide more timely information to parents and players. Feel free to have a browse and let us know what you think. There are still some sections to be updated. Once the season starts we’re hoping you’ll send in match reports and other news items which can be added and viewed by all Club members. Many thanks to Jonathon Alsop for all his work in developing the new site. Coaching calendar/Referee CourseThe 3-Clubs (Onslow, North Wellington and Karori) coaching calendar is on the new website along with a Coaches Development Guide. There are a number of different courses offered through the season ranging from ‘How to Develop a Coaching Plan’ to ‘Coaching refresher courses’ and practical demonstrations. Please note in particular the practical demonstration courses to be run on 21 and 28 March and contact propato_coordinator@yahoo.co.nz if you wish to attend. Onslow Junior Football Club is also offering a referee course run by Capital Football’s Jamie Cross. This will be held on 9th April at 7pm and takes about 3 hours. If you are interested please contact football@onslow.org.nz Holiday programmeThere will be a 3-clubs holiday programme in the Easter holidays. More details are available here or contact propato_coordinator@yahoo.co.nz. This is intended for 5 to 14 year olds and is running both weeks of the school holidays. Police checks for coachesThe Club is very aware of its duty of care to all players and to this end has instigated police checks for all new coaches in order to comply with best practice in this regard, protecting the players, coaches and Club. This has recently become an easier process as it now possible to complete a police check request online. It is wholly confidential and the Club is not provided with any information on the applicant other than a ‘yes’ or ‘no’. Injury Prevention and Management/Pre-season trainingNow that many players are thinking about pre-season training, the Club would like to remind players and parents of the importance of injury prevention. Successful injury prevention must be part of an integrated programme that covers all the issues that lead to sporting injuries. ACC’s Sport Smart programme for injury prevention outlines some areas which will help reduce the risk of injury during sport: http://www.acc.co.nz/preventing-injuries/playing-sport/sportsmart-10-point-plan/index.htm On the subject of pre-season training the following website may also be of use. It is a free, online football fitness trainer designed and run by New Zealand’s top physical conditioners: http://www.soccersmart.co.nz/ Gear Amnesty – reminder!!The Club has announced a gear amnesty. Please could you search your cupboards, garages (and freezers) and put any Onslow gear you find into the mailbox at 7 Ngatato Street, Ngaio - no questions asked!
